Peter Alis at the Pavilion Theatre Rhyl

This performance may be of interst to members and below is a copy of a promotional e mail recently received.

Dear Golf Club,
We are pleased to announce that Peter Alliss will be appearing at the PAVILION THEATRE, RHYL on Saturday 9th October 7.30pm and a special offer is enclosed for you and your members.
With his father, Percy Alliss, among the finest players of his generation, it was perhaps inevitable that Peter would also make a career in golf. Percy hired Peter as his unpaid assistant at Ferndown Golf Club, allowing him time off during midweek to compete in tournaments. With some degree of success in his first professional tournaments, Peter quickly established himself among the top young players of the time.
Between 1954 and 1969, he won 21 professional tournaments - including three British PGA championships - and was twice winner of the Vardon Trophy. In September 1958, he won the national championships of Italy, Spain, and Portugal in three consecutive weeks.
His first appearance in the Ryder Cup was in 1953, and with the single exception of 1955, he represented Great Britain and Ireland in the event until 1969. He is one of only two father-and-son duos to have represented their country at this level.
Peter made his broadcasting debut way back in 1961, as part of the BBC team covering the Open Championship at Birkdale which was won by Arnold Palmer. His retirement from international golf at the – relatively early – age of 38 led to a full-time career \\\"on the other side of the ropes.\\\" By 1978 he was the BBC\\\'s chief golf commentator following the death of his co-host and great friend Henry Longhurst.
Peter once claimed he\\\'s a golf commentator only because he\\\'s \\\"there as an old player, a lover of the game and a good weaver of stories\\\". Modesty would prevent him saying that Golf Digest described him as \\\"the greatest golf commentator ever\\\" – but to many that\\\'s what he is.
\\\"When it comes to painting a picture with words, he\\\'s nothing short of Rembrandt…\\\"
\\\"Alliss [is] one of the finest strikers of the golf ball in the land…\\\"
Tickets are normally priced at £19.50 no concessions, however, we are pleased to offer tickets with £5 off per ticket for you and your members. Please call the Box Office to book your seat on 01745 33 00 00 and quote ‘GOLF OFFER’.

To the membership at Old Padeswood:

The directors would like to thank the membership for their understanding during and following the works to the greens undertaken during the maintenance week.

I thought it would be worthwhile explaining what it is we have done and why.

The works

The initial operation was to deep scarify the greens using a Koro tractor mounted machine fitted with an elevator to remove the debris from the greens of site.

The machine was followed by two members of the greens team who snow shovelled debris off the green before blowing it clean with a back pack blower.

Once the green was cleared we then applied top dressing material to the green on average three tons was applied to each green to fill in the slits made buy the Koro scarifier this material was brushed into the slits to get as much filled in as possible. If more material was required to fill in the gaps we would apply extra before seeding.

The greens were now over seeded a proprietary green renovation mix from Johnson’s seed houses. The over seeding machine has a spiked roller that makes little plant pots for the seed to find a home in and by undertaking the work in this order we did not bury any seed too deep for it to stand a chance to germinate.

Following the seeding the greens were again brushed moving the seed into the plant pots and covering with top dressing.

Finally any areas that were low on top dressing were dressed out by hand. The works were completed by late Thursday morning. Following heavy rain on the Friday 13th the recovery was nearly complete and now they are playing really well.

The work is a significant piece of the annual maintenance programme and is not undertaken lightly as the greens looked so good before we started the works. The cost of undertaking the work is not insignificant either as the cost of the scarifier for the 18 holes Is £1,200.00, 6 bags of seed at £180.00 a bag and 36 tonnes of top dressing material at £40.40 a tonne equates to a total cost of £3734.40 excluding Labour costs.

The work is undertaken to remove thatch from the upper surface of the greens which if left would result in soft disease susceptible surfaces that would be unplayable in winter. This encourages the finer grasses and deeper rooting of the desired species. The traditional way that this work was undertaken was to hollow tine greens this method removes 5% of the playing surface whereas, the deep linear scarification removes 20% of the playing surface and is therefore 4 times as effective or alternatively we would have to hollow tine 4 times during the season which would ultimately be more disruptive to play.

By over seeding at this time of year when the soil temperature is high and moisture is available the germination rate is considerably better than in the later months of the year. By seeding now the plants will be more mature by the time we move into the colder months.

I personally would like to thank the greens staff who worked so hard to complete this important task in such a short period of time particularly those who worked past the usual finish time ensuring that the work was completed and did not drag on for two full days.

Week commencing 20/09/2010

Immediately after completion of finals weekend we will be undertaking the verti draining of fairways. This is a painstaking laborious job at the best of times and as such I would advise golfers that the greens staff have priority. If you can not wait for the machine to pass you, you must pick up and walk past the machine and resume play do not!!! Play a ball over the machine and operator. Any damage cased to man or machine will be claimed for.
